University Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) 3CGS Short Courses 2018

The Centre for Climate Change and Gender Studies (3CGS) University Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) is organizing short courses for academics and professionals in varied fields of endeavour. The courses are aimed at giving practical soft skills and updating academic and professional personnel on new and trending methods in research, policy, and practice.

Gender Responsive Institutions : 18 -20 May 2018

Introduction

How can policies and programmes be inclusive and more specifically, gender sensitive? How do values of inclusiveness and gender equality result in better performance and greater benefits for your organization or community? This course discusses gender-sensitive strategies as well as tools for gender analysis, mainstreaming gender and gender-responsive budgeting in policies and programmes at the local level.

Special attention shall be given to designing strategies for an effective and meaningful involvement of marginalized groups (i.e. women, youth) in development initiatives. The course will also underline how best to engage men and women to discuss cross-cutting issues of applying a diverse gender perspective (intersectionality), especially in complex cultural.

Key concepts of this course shall include gender analysis, gender mainstreaming, gender budgeting, gender auditing, equitable service delivery, social economic empowerment, meaningful participation, transformative change, effective communication, and working with gender in complex settings.

Course Objectives:  

This course aims to:

  1. Increase knowledge on gender concepts and relate to  insights in gender-responsive governance, including fragile and context;
  2. Adopt tools for conducting gender analysis, gender mainstreaming and budgeting in development initiatives;
  3. Improve participant’s personal skills in effective communication and action planning for a meaningful change in organization /programme activities.
  4.  Integrate gender into project development and implementation.

Academic Research Proposal Writing : 13- 15 June 2018

Description

This course focuses on the art of writing academic research proposals (at the postgraduate level). Participants will be taken through identifying the research problem and stating it, defining research objectives or questions, developing a suitable hypothesis and characteristics of academic research proposals. It further focuses on literature search to support the proposal development.

Course delivery involves a combination of theoretical guidelines with practices examples and gives participants opportunity to gain practical skills through in-class exercises.

Introduction to Qualitative, Quantitative and Mixed Research Methods: 22- 24 August 2018

Description

Identify the suitable research method and following through its methodological details can be confusing for most early researchers. This course takes a practical, simplified approach to unpacking the methodological intricacies of qualitative, quantitative and mixed research methods.

Project Proposal Writing : 24-26 October 2018

Description

Several donor-funded projects are advertised all year round. The competitiveness of the applications demands that interested applicants are skilled in the project proposal writing art to increase their chances of receiving funding. This course offers participants with the skills, tricks and secrets of putting together a highly promising project proposal, and how to manage project’s life cycle once funding is secured.

Regularly successful project applicants from governmental and non-governmental organizations will deliver the course in a practical way.

Description

This course seeks to equip managers and/or prospective project managers with the skills to coordinate the implementation of a project from the beginning to the end. Participants will benefit from the expertise of personnel who have successfully handled several donor projects.
